Instagram post 2187218934789297424_8434960754 Experiences become a part of our identity. We are the accumulation of everything we’ve seen, the things we’ve done, and the places we’ve been. Time spent in this beautiful frozen landscape, amidst all the wildlife inhabiting it, is certainly leaving its mark on me.
When our environment challenges our comfort, we have the capacity to adapt, cope, and grow. We can strengthen our resilience to discomfort.
How is your current experience shaping you?

Instagram post 2180241728580250101_8434960754 At airport check in we are asked ‘did you pack the bag yourself?’…it’s a question we could ask ourselves in daily life too. It is worth checking the origins of some of our baggage and letting go of what is weighing heavily.
The reality is we are each shaped by our interactions and experiences and it is inevitable we accumulate some excess baggage along the way. Our body and mind can become the dumping ground for unresolved emotions, unrealistic expectations, lost opportunities, and disappointments. In an effort to escape discomfort it can be tempting to deny, dismiss, numb, or trap ourselves in spirals of shame, guilt, and embarrassment.
We cover up suffering by being busy rather than slowing down and directing our attention inwards. Taking the time understand and transform, rather than transmit, the stuff we are carrying helps us to minimise the damage we inflict on ourselves and those around us.

Instagram post 2177366904853794128_8434960754 As Australia stands on the brink of summer with its wide blue skies and bright warming sun, I’m stepping outside my comfort zone, restricting my exposure to daylight, and immersing myself in ice cold water. I’ve read the research and my trip within the Arctic Circle will provide an opportunity to monitor first-hand the impact of changes in my environment on my physical and mental wellbeing. Follow along and see how my experience of limited daylight and daily cold water immersion impacts both body and mind…..click on the link in bio to read the “Enlightening” blog

Instagram post 2175798703653239585_8434960754 Themes of social justice (Psychology Week) and kindness and compassion (World Kindness Day) have been swirling and prompting a little reflection on how we integrate these concepts in our daily interactions. How do we balance our joint responsibilities as a society and our responsibilities as individuals? Faced with challenging circumstances we can be tempted to arm ourselves with forceful opinions and irrefutable evidence, we can raise our shields, close our minds, and cultivate an air of defensiveness. If this is how we show up, others will sense our combative approach and aggressive energy and naturally respond by raising their own shield. The result is stalemate – no one breaks through. Underpinning challenge, debate, and dispute, with a foundation of compassion allows us to share ideas with kindness, patience, curiosity and a genuine desire to understand others perspective. Then, in turn, we might see a ripple of relaxing and openness in those around us. By injecting a healthy dose of kindness and compassion into social justice we treat people as a human first, and an opinion second.

Instagram post 2171643512486046150_8434960754 Fear, Courage and Resilience
Courage is not about being fearless, it’s about finding a healthy relationship with uncertainty, making peace with impermanence, wakening up to who you really are, and what is at the root of the fear you are experiencing. Fear can act as a finger pointing at the issues in need of attention in our life. Fear challenges us to be brave and afraid all at once and to know we have within us the potential to relax the nervous system and focus our mind on healing and soothing.
Fear develops in waves. We experience the first wave of ‘clean discomfort’ – the natural physical and emotional discomfort arising from who we are and the situation we are in. There is no escaping ‘clean discomfort’ because life serves it up to us all in one way or another. When we struggle and resist this natural response, we encounter a second wave of ‘dirty discomfort’ that acts as an emotional amplifier and drives us to rid ourselves of this distress by any means possible (avoidance, numbing, distraction). Rather than allow our choices to be ruled by dirty discomfort and the secondary emotions that arise with it (anger, guilt, depression, anxiety, intolerance, resentment, shame) we can work on changing our default response to the first wave and enable our emotional energy to move through us rather than becoming stuck in a struggle with our body and mind.
We might be tempted to equate the resilience required with ‘toughening up’ but nothing could be further from the truth. To quote Anne Alexander at Mindful ‘resilience requires mental suppleness, flexibility, and raw vulnerability’. To develop resilience, we have to dive deeply into our psyche with compassion. It is well worth committing the time and energy to understanding our thoughts and feelings, our past hurts and wounds, long established patterns of behaviour and response, and to do all of this with compassion, curiosity, and loving care.

Instagram post 2166631442442930687_8434960754 Today is a day where we expect to encounter others wearing a disguise. Maybe it is also a time to reflect on all the masks we wear throughout the year. We might move through life feeling disconnected from ourselves because we are pretending to be someone for others, and it doesn’t feel authentic.
We may succumb to pressure to act certain ways, look certain ways, to always be strong, happy or hold certain beliefs. Have you fallen into wearing a mask out of habit? Who are you trying to please by keeping the mask in place? Remember you can always choose to remove your mask. Have you outgrown a mask you are wearing? What would it mean to reveal yourself. What would it mean to be exactly who you are? It is not always easy to be courageous and true to be who you are but it is a relief to live authentically. It is worth investing time exploring who you are and what actions are aligned with your values. #values #neveralone #knowyourmind #growyourmind #selfhealers #integrativetherapy #mindbody #breathwork #ecotherapy #therapywalks #changeforgood #growthmindset #mentalhealth #habitsofhealth
